Traditional Publishing

Personally, as a writer, I don’t fear the change that is predicted to come in regards to publishing. This change I am speaking of is the prediction that as we go further into the digital age all books will become audio or E-books, leaving traditional hardbound books to be a thing of the past. If this does happen, it’s not something we should fear as writers, because even if it all moves to digital, books will still exist and people will still be reading them. As long as people are reading, writers will be writing.

And I personally don’t think that physical books are going to go away completely in the near future. There are plenty of people still reading them. The percentage of people who only read E-books is much lower than those who either read a combination or solely hard copies. I think a part of this may be because, as human beings, we are often motivated by aesthetic, and electronic copies of books simply don’t match the aesthetic value of a physical book. Posting a picture your iPad displaying the title page of a book doesn’t compare to posting a picture of a beautifully designed book cover.

Whatever the future holds, we shouldn’t fear it. Embracing the new methods of publishing can be a great help for writers. Today it is easier than ever to get your work out there in one form or another. The new age of publishing is not the demise of writers, but rather a time of grand opportunity for them.

  1. I agree! I really loved your sentence, “As long as people are reading, writers will be writing.” I don’t think, either, that this shift towards digital will be that horrible. As you put it, the aesthetic qualities of actual books will always outweigh electronic versions!
